Acne is a skin condition characterized by pustules on the skin, which can break open into lesions. It occurs when the pores become blocked by excess oil in the skin and is especially common during adolescence. You can treat acne at home by practicing basic skin hygiene and using over-the-counter medication. A variety of acne medications are available without a prescription and you can identify their effects from the active ingredients.

Step 1

Wash your hands. Clean them thoroughly with soap and warm water whenever you must touch your acne to wash it or apply medication. Refrain from touching the open lesions more than necessary. Frequently, the best thing you can do for acne is to allow blemishes to heal naturally.

Step 2

Wash your acne with a gentle liquid soap. Use a soft washcloth to rub the skin gently instead of scrubbing. Rinse your acne with soap and warm water, and pat it dry with a towel. Avoid washing your skin excessively, as this can dry out your skin and cause it to become inflamed.

Step 3

Use benzoyl peroxide. Acne medication that contains benzoyl peroxide is available in a variety of forms, including creams and lotions. Apply the medication to your acne according to the instructions for your particular product. Benzoyl peroxide increases the oxygen content of the air within the pores of your skin. This can inhibit the growth of bacteria, which makes acne worse.

Step 4

Apply acne medication that contains salicylic acid. This class of acne medication encourages the shedding of dead skin cells, keeping pores free of cellular debris and reducing blocked pores.

Step 5

Treat blackheads and whiteheads with acne medication that contains resorcinol and sulfur. These types of acne medications serve as antiseptics and disinfectants to prevent acne lesions from becoming infected.
