Acne can appear anywhere on the skin, but most often occurs on the face. Many people experience acne that localizes around a particular area on the face, such as around the mouth. Because the mouth moves frequently throughout the day, acne in this area can cause the skin to feel very painful and irritated. To effectively treat and eliminate acne, it is important to cleanse, exfoliate and medicate the skin properly.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin around your mouth using a natural soap designed for sensitive skin types, which will be free of chemicals that could irritate the skin and exacerbate acne. Natural soaps designed for sensitive skin types will be free of artificial fragrances, dyes and chemicals that could potentially irritate the skin. You can find a natural, sensitive skin soap at a health food store or natural foods marketplace. Look for a soap that contains basic ingredients, such as olive oil, aloe vera and essential oils. Avoid soaps that contain chemical additives, such as sodium lauryl sulfates or petroleum. Wet the skin around your mouth, and lather your hands with the soap. Spread the lather onto the affected skin, making sure to cover the entire area. Rinse off your skin well with water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Remove dead skin cells around the mouth that could clog the pores by using a natural, mildly abrasive scrub, such as baking soda. Exfoliating the skin keeps the skin free of dead skin cells that can become lodged into the pores, which can lead to blackheads and acne. Pour 1 Tbsp. of baking soda into the palm of your hand, and drizzle in 1 tsp. of water. Spread the baking soda mixture onto the skin around your mouth, using your finger tips to massage the paste in for one to two minutes. Rinse off the baking soda mixture well with water. Repeat once per day after the skin has been cleansed.

Step 3

Spot treat the skin around the mouth using a low concentration benzoyl peroxide cream. Using a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide can clear up acne without causing the side effects that the higher strength creams can, such as burning or redness. Squeeze a pea-sized amount of a low concentration benzoyl peroxide cream, 2.5 percent or lower, onto your finger. Spread the cream onto the affected skin. Avoid rubbing the cream in too vigorously, which can cause irritation. Continue to spread the cream onto the skin until it has been absorbed completely. Repeat up to two times per day.
