How to Get Rid of a Breakout


"Breakouts" is a term used to describe multiple pimples and blemishes that appear simultaneously--often on the face. Acne breakouts are caused by an overproduction of oil, buildup of bacteria on the skin and abnormal shedding of skin cells, according to the Mayo Clinic. Certain factors, such as genetics, hormones and stress, can increase the risk of developing acne. Breakouts should be treated to avoid potential infections and scarring. If you are unsuccessful at controlling breakouts at home, consult a doctor about a prescription for a topical retinoid.

Step 1

Wash the affected skin area twice a day. Get rid of excess oil by using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water twice a day. Always wash the skin after sweating to get rid of the oils found in perspiration. Don't scrub at acne--that can irritate the breakout and make it worse.

Step 2

Apply an over-the-counter, topical acne medication. After washing and drying the affected area, use a gel, cream or lotion that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Use the medication twice a day until your breakout clears up.

Step 3

Keep your face free of makeup. Piling on foundation to hide breakouts can clog the pores and cause more pimples to appear. Instead, cover the blemishes with a concealer that contains acne-fighting salicylic acid, according to "Marie Claire" magazine.

Step 4

Control the amount of oil that comes into contact with your skin. To prevent and treat breakouts on your face, avoid transferring oils by keeping your hair pulled back and cleaning objects that touch your face, such as telephones, before you use them.
