Overview

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, excess sebum or oil production can clog pores and lead to blackheads. Medical News Today notes that blackheads can also be caused by dirty skin, or using too much makeup, lotion or sunscreen. There are several options you can try to remove dirt and blackheads from your skin.

Step 1

Steam your skin for for about 15 to 20 minutes. Medical News Today advises you to place your face over a bowl of very hot water and put a towel over your head to hold in the steam. This is designed to draw the dirt and blackheads to the surface, loosen them and it can make the removal process less painful.

Step 2

Use a cleanser, glycolic peel or cream to loosen the blackheads and lift the clogged pores. This can be done in conjunction with steaming or in lieu of that step. According to Target Woman, cleansers with salicylic acid, tea tree oil, witch hazel or lactic acid are all effective options.

Step 3

Extract the blackheads with a flat blackhead remover, which you can find at any beauty store according to Medical News Today. Center the remover over the blackhead and press down to pop or dislodge the blackhead from your skin. Target Woman notes that you can also squeeze blackheads out with a cotton ball.

Step 4

Try other treatment options if you feel more comfortable or you are not experienced using a blackhead remover. Target Woman notes that blackhead removal strips and blackhead guns are available from beauty stores to get rid of blackheads. The strips work similar to wax strips to pull the blackheads off and the gun works like a vacuum to suck the blackheads off the skin.
