The American Academy of Dermatology describes acne as the most common skin condition in the United States. It's caused by dead skin and excess oil obstructing the opening to the hair follicle. This increases the potential for bacteria developing within the pore, which results in the inflammation associated with acne. If you're a guy, simple skin care can often help give you clear skin.

Step 1

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and warm water. The Mayo Clinic warns that astringents and exfoliants can aggravate the skin, which may worsen the complexion, so stick to gentle cleansers formulated for the face.

Step 2

Shower after exercise, urges the Mayo Clinic. Even if you only break a light sweat, your pores are more likely to become clogged with dead skin, dirt and bacteria. Also, make sure to wash your workout apparel after each use.

Step 3

Watch what you eat. Although diet doesn't actually cause acne, the American Academy of Dermatology explains that certain foods can exacerbate the condition. These foods vary from person to person, but greasy foods tend to pose the most problems. This is due to the potential residue left on the skin, especially around the mouth, after eating such foods.

Step 4

Stick to "oil-free" moisturizers, aftershaves and sunscreens. Oil-free or water-based skin care products are typically labeled as non-comedogenic, which means they won't clog the pores, states the American Academy of Dermatology.

Step 5

Invest in an acne cream. If you suffer from periodic breakouts, have an acne cream on hand, namely those containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or retinoids. Acne creams not only help to kill excess bacteria that may lead to acne, but they also remove dead skin and oil that could further clog your pores, maintains the Mayo Clinic.

Step 6

Note the type of clothing you're wearing. If you are plagued by acne on the back, neck, shoulders, waist or buttocks, the tightness of your clothing may be contributing to its development. The reason for this is twofold. First, tight clothing tends to increase the amount of heat and moisture near the skin. Second, this type of clothing can also increase the amount of friction taking place along the skin. Both factors can irritate the skin, and thereby result in acne.
