Overview

In medical terms, acne is an infection of the pilosebaceous unit, which consists of the sebaceous gland and the hair follicle. The sebaceous gland produces oil--called sebum--which passes freely through healthy follicles to provide a water barrier on the skin. Sometimes, skin cells and sebum are trapped inside, forming a plug and providing a breeding ground for bacteria. When the plug breaks through the skin’s surface, a blackhead develops. The black color is a reaction of the sebum and bacteria with the air. Blackhead removal should be done carefully to avoid scarring.

Step 1

Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser every day or even several times per day, but especially before you try to remove a blackhead. If you have oily hair, wash it daily. Abrasives--either on a pad or in a cleanser--are not recommended for acne-prone skin, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Step 2

Mix a tbsp. of Epsom salt in 1/2 cup of warm water and add a few drops of iodine. When it cools, apply the solution to the blackhead and the surrounding area. Repeat this twice daily for several days to help draw the blackhead out naturally. Use a mild green tea scrub after each application.

Step 3

Make a paste of crushed fenugreek and water. Apply it to the blackhead and let it dry on the skin. Leave it in place for 20 minutes, then rinse it away with warm water. Repeat the application at least once per day until the blackhead is gone, or further measures are needed. Results from allopathic remedies can vary, and the efficacy of such methods has often not been subjected to the rigors of double-blind, randomized studies.

Step 4

Open your pores by using a facial steamer in preparation for manual blackhead removal if the natural remedies are not working. You can also stand in a hot shower for a good, long time before you attempt to remove the blackhead.

Step 5

Wrap your finger in gauze and wet it with a paste of baking soda and water. Coat the blackhead with the paste and wait five minutes. Gently press next to the blackhead using your unwrapped finger to brace the other side. Do not squeeze the area, or you may actually bruise the skin. Slowly roll the gauze-wrapped finger toward the blackhead and release it. Keep slowly and gently working until you’ve released the plug and the fluid behind it. Catch any fluid exiting the poor on the gauze. Accidentally rubbing it into your skin can force bacteria into the adjacent pores and cause more breakouts, according to Daniel W. Kern, founder of the community organization acne.org.

Step 6

Remove the blackhead with a remover tool if it is particularly stubborn, but if you are inexperienced with the tool, it may be better to let a professional esthetician do it for you. The tool consists of a metal scoop with a hole in the center and a lancet on the end. Place the hole around the open pore and push down gently. Slowly pull the tool to force the plug through the pore and onto a cotton ball. Use the lancet only to help open the area slightly. Overuse can result in permanently stretched pores that will likely get infected again in the future.
