How to Fix Acne Scars
Acne scars can make you feel like hiding in the corner for the rest of your life. Since this isn't really possible, it's a much better idea to treat your acne scars and put your best face forward. To do that, you'll need to find a treatment that works on your scars. Everything from creams, resurfacing and surgery can be used to fix acne scars, so your job is to figure out which will work best in your case.
Be patient. In a lot of cases, acne scars will fade away on their own. You just have to give them time. This is especially true of very shallow scars and red marks left behind by acne inflammation.
Take care of your skin on a daily basis. Wash with a mild cleanser, tone with an alcohol-free astringent and moisturize with an oil-free lotion. If you still have acne, seek dermatological help to clear it up before you attempt to fix your scars.
Use an exfoliant on your skin every week. This can come in the form of a scrub or peel that contains alpha hydroxy acid. This treatment works by penetrating the skin and encouraging the top layer to peel off in order to reveal healthier, less scar damaged skin underneath. You will need to use this exfoliant for at least 6 weeks before you start to notice a difference.
Have deeply depressed scars filled with collagen or fat. Though only a temporary treatment, these fillers literally fill in the space where a scar resides and makes your skin look even.
Have a resurfacing procedure performed. For surface scars, dermabrasion can help remove the top layer of skin and encourage new tissue growth to eliminate unevenness. During this procedure, a wire brush will be placed on the scar (after you've been anesthetized) and run over your skin until the top layer of skin is removed. Recovery can be painful, and the procedure will likely leave your skin looking pink for several months.
Have very deep scars surgically removed. By using a technique called punch excision, your dermatologist can remove the entire scar and stitch the tissue around it back together. This straightforward procedure might create a new scar, but it will be much less noticeable than the acne scar.
