How to Fight Acne & Wrinkles
There isn't necessarily one method to fight both acne and wrinkles. You often need to rely on a few different skin care techniques to improve your overall complexion. Some techniques and preparations help manage the papules, pustules and other lesions associated with acne, while others minimize the fine lines, wrinkles and folds that accompany aging. This doesn't mean you can't treat acne at the same time you're trying to maintain a more youthful appearance to your skin. It's just going to take separate products or procedures to provide results.
Wash acne prone areas twice a day. Stick with a gentle cleanser, especially for your face. This type of product doesn't irritate the skin or exacerbate acne lesions like exfoliants or astringents.
Apply an over-the-counter (OTC) acne cream. Even if you are not currently suffering an acne breakout, OTC acne creams remove the dead skin, excess oil and bacteria that can cause acne. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid over those that contain sulfur, resorcinol, aluminum chloride, zinc or sodium sulfacetamide.
See your dermatologist for a topical prescription acne preparation if OTC acne creams fail to improve your complexion. Prescription creams contain retinoids, antibiotics or higher concentrations of benzoyl peroxide to reduce pore obstructions and kill bacteria thereby reducing papules and clearing the skin.
Note the ingredients found in other skin care products. Moisturizers, sunscreens, after shaves and cosmetics can contain oil-based ingredients that lead to acne breakouts. Use only those products listed as noncomedogenic, meaning they won't clog your pores.
Pay attention to items that touch your skin. Phones, eyeglasses, helmet straps, collars and even hair can trap excess oil and dead skin next to your skin, which could lead to clogged pores and acne lesions. Regularly clean objects that come in contact with your skin, pull back hair and wear loose clothing to avoid a breakout.
Launder clothes with regularity. Soiled clothing can trap excess oil and dead skin just like phones, glasses and hats, so make sure to launder clothing regularly, particularly after exercise or when you're prone to acne breakouts.
Apply sunscreen whenever heading outdoors, urges the Mayo Clinic. Ultraviolet rays can damage the skin and cause premature aging, so apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to help fight wrinkles.
Use a moisturizer daily. Dry skin contributes to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, so moisturizers can sometimes help reduce the signs of aging. However, stick with noncomedogenic creams and lotions to prevent acne lesions.
Use a topical retinoid. This substance can be used to treat both acne and wrinkles. Adapalene, tazarotene and tretinoin, which are available by prescription, are all retinoids that can increase the production of collagen under their application sites, which helps to fill in line and wrinkles. Some over-the-counter wrinkle creams contain retinol, which is a milder retinoid.
Quit smoking. Much like the sun, smoking can also contribute to premature aging. Stopping today can prevent additional lines and wrinkles from forming, advises the Mayo Clinic.
