Overview

Acne is a common skin problem that affects people of all ages. It can cause the skin to become covered in unsightly blackheads, papules, pustules and cysts. Due to the inflammatory nature of acne, using chemically-based, over-the-counter acne products to clear the skin can lead to over drying of the skin and irritation. Fortunately, there are alternative ways to treat acne breakouts that treat the skin gently and help the skin regulate its own oil production.

Step 1

Apply a cream cleanser to unclog the pores without drying out the skin. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp. of non-comedogenic facial cream with 1 tsp. of baking soda (a mildly abrasive exfoliant), mixing the substances well with your finger. Spread the cream onto moistened skin and gently press the mixture into the skin with the palm, then roll the palm off of the face in a fluid motion. Repeat this pattern around the entire face for two minutes, then rinse off the cream cleanser with warm water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Apply a toner that contains clarifying herbs, such as calendula and echinacea.
Clarifying toners help remove acne-causing bacteria while improving the skin's ability to slough off dead skin cells. Fill a bottle with 8 oz. of witch hazel, and add in 1 tsp. of calendula essential oil and 1 tsp. of echinacea tincture. Shake the mixture to combine them well. Soak a cotton ball in the toner, and gently spread it around the skin after cleansing. Repeat twice per day.

Step 3

Apply a non-comedogenic oil to help regulate oil production in the skin.
This encourages the skin to slow down its own oil production, thereby reducing the frequency of acne outbreaks. Place three to four drops of jojoba oil into your palm, and rub your hands together to evenly distribute the oil between them. Pat the oil onto the skin, covering the entire face with a very thin layer. Allow the oil to soak into the skin. Repeat twice per day after toning the skin.
