How to Fade Brown Spots on the Face

How to Fade Brown Spots on the Face How to Fade Brown Spots on the Face

Overview

Over the years, the collective results of the sun's damage to your cells may appear as brown spots on your skin. The Mayo Clinic says such discolorations usually appear in people ages 40 or older, although they can sometimes show up on younger individuals. Brown spots aren't permanent. Restore a more flawless complexion with a combination of skin-repairing and skin-protecting techniques and products.

Step 1

Wash your face with an exfoliating cleanser made with alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxyl acids every morning and evening, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. These acids help loosen and wash away surface skin cells that are already damaged, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, helping to reduce wrinkles and skin discolorations like dark spots.

Step 2

Escape the midday sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. by staying indoors, advises the American Academy of Dermatology. During this time, the sun's rays are the strongest and have a greater potential for causing new brown spots or darkening the existing spots that you're trying to fade.

Step 3

Slather on sunscreen every morning, recommends skincare tester Paula Begoun, even if you don't go out or if it's overcast. Sun rays can still affect you through a window's reflections, and the American Academy of Dermatology warns that 80 percent of the sun's ultraviolet light penetrates overcast skies. Begoun suggests using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more.

Step 4

Dab on a skin bleaching cream formulated with retinoids---often marked as retinol or vitamin A on a product's ingredients label---or hydroquinone every evening, according to the Mayo Clinic. Hydroquinone inhibits your skin cell's production of pigment to help fade spots and other forms of discolorations. Retinoids accelerate skin cell turnover and rejuvenation, and can also help with other forms of sun damage like fine lines, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
