How to Exfoliate and Peel


Using facial peels and exfoliating products gets rid of dead skin cells that can clog your pores and make your skin look dull, says dermatologist Ted Lain, MD. Lain also states that, as you get older, your skin's production of collagen decreases, which can make your face look saggy and lead to more wrinkles. Regular exfoliation increases blood flow and encourages your cells' collagen production, according to dermatologist Harold Lancer. This makes skin appear healthier and more vibrant. Choose products designed to refresh and renew your skin, and make the rest of your skin care regimen compliment these goals.

Step 1

Wash your face twice a day with a mild, gentle cleanser designed for your skin type. Exfoliators and peels can be harsh on skin and make it more sensitive, so you should not use a cleanser that contains harsh ingredients or that may cause irritation.

Step 2

Twice a week, use an exfoliating peel that contains fruit enzymes, which have been designed to gently rid your skin of dead cells, as well as refine and even out your skin tone. You should avoid products that contain harsh ingredients, like crushed nuts, as these can be rough on skin and cause damage, says aesthetician Kate Somerville. She recommends an exfoliating peel like Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel, which contains milk proteins, anti-oxidants and algae, in addition to papaya and pineapple enzymes. It promises to smooth your skin while repairing, soothing and moisturizing it at the same time. Apply a thin layer to your face after you wash it, and let the peel dry for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin after cleansing and exfoliating to keep it nourished and hydrated. For the daytime, use a gentle or calming moisturizer that has been formulated for your skin type. To encourage more cell renewal and collagen production, use a nighttime moisturizer that contains retinol. If you have sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol, look for a nightly anti-aging cream that contains peptides instead, says Nicholas Perricone, MD.

Step 4

Apply sunscreen every day, and reapply it every few hours if you are outdoors. Since exfoliators and peels remove the top layers of skin, they make you more prone to sunburn. Regular application of sunscreen will also help prevent the signs of aging and keep your skin healthy. According to Elle, Dr. Lain recommends a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher that also contains anti-oxidants and vitamins to provide you with even more sun protection. He suggests Citrix Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF 30.
