How to Eliminate Acne Marks

Overview

As if the original acne weren't bad enough, some outbreaks leave scars. Scars are part of the natural healing process, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The more damage done to the lower levels of the skin, the more severe the scarring. Unfortunately, as the Scar Information Service notes, scarred skin will never completely return to normal, even if treated. Clinical treatments, therefore, focus on improvement rather than complete elimination.

Step 1

Talk to your dermatologist about chemical peels. A peel involves applying an acidic solution to the scarred area, which will burn away the top layer of skin and reveal fresher skin underneath. Chemical peels are available in various strengths. Some peels can be used at home, while others must be done by a doctor.

Step 2

Speak with your dermatologist about dermabrasion. In dermabrasion, a rotating wire brush scrapes away the surface layer of skin. It is sometimes used in conjunction with punch-technique scar removal.

Step 3

Look into punch techniques for deep acne scarring. This procedure involves cutting the scar tissue from the face. The skin is then sewn together for a smoother overall appearance. Skin grafts from other areas of the body are sometimes used.

Step 4

Speak with your specialist about cytotoxic injection options. Considered a preferred treatment for raised scars, this procedure involves injecting fleshy lumps with fluorouracil, which is a cancer-fighting drug, or bleomycin, an antibiotic. The idea is to break down the tissue fibers. Low-strength steroids are sometimes injected to further improve results.

Step 5

Consider laser resurfacing. This treatment removes the upper layer of damaged skin to reveal new less-blemished skin beneath while also heating the lower layers, the dermis, to facilitate new skin production.
