How to Dry Up Acne

Overview

The "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology" estimates that approximately 50 million Americans suffer from acne. This skin condition occurs when your skin's pores become clogged and infected, warns the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus, and can leave your skin covered in pimples and looking red and inflamed. Provide your skin with the care it needs to dry up the acne blemishes and clear up your complexion for renewed smoothness.

Step 1

Wash your skin twice a day, according to the National Institutes of Health. The institutes specifically recommend using a gentle cleanser from Basics, Neutrogena or Dove, or any other mild, nondrying cleanser. Do not wash more often because this dries out the skin and encourages an overproduction of skin oil, which in turn can make your acne worse.

Step 2

Smooth on an acne treatment cream twice daily after washing. For the best results, skincare expert Paula Begoun recommends using an acne cream formulated with salicylic acid at a concentration of 1 to 2 percent, which helps clear your pores, or a benzoyl peroxide product that helps to directly kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Step 3

Avoid aggravating your acne-ridden skin while treating the skin condition. The National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases recommends not touching your skin and also advises against exposing your skin to the sun.

Step 4

Consult your dermatologist if such over-the-counter cleansers and treatment creams don't start clearing up your acne after several weeks of use. The National Institutes of Health suggest asking about prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid topicals, or oral antibiotics like erythromycin or minocycline.
