How to Decrease Face Oil How to Decrease Face Oil

Overview

Your face naturally produces oil to maintain its hydration and elasticity, according to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology." However, sometimes your face can produce more oil that you are happy with, leading to a shiny appearance that makes powdered cosmetics look like sludge. Though it is unhealthy and generally not possible to eliminate oil production completely, according to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," you can take steps to reduce the oil on your face.

Step 1

Cleanse your face daily with an oil-free facial cleanser. According to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," facial cleansers that are marketed for oily skin typically do not contain oil. Use these cleansers to wash your face without adding oil to your face.

Step 2

Apply an oil-free moisturizer to your face after cleansing. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," applying a moisturizer to your face once or twice a day will keep your skin hydrated without forcing your body to produce its own oil. Therefore, the amount of oil that the skin on your face produces will decrease.

Step 3

Blot any excess oil on your face that appears throughout the day with an oil blotting paper, which you can buy at drugstores and beauty supply store. The oil blotting paper will wick away any oil on the surface of your skin without drying your skin, according to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual."
