Your skin consists of pores that open to provide oil to the skin, helping to soften it. For the most part, these pores are difficult to see unless you are close to the skin. Those with large pores have highly visible pores that resemble round openings. While some are genetically pre-disposed to experience large pores, others may experience them due to poor hygiene habits or damage to the skin. Large pores can become a cosmetic concern because they can keep the skin tone from appearing even. Knowledge of how to treat them can improve your skin's overall appearance.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily to remove excess oils from the skin, suggests Best Health magazine. Removing excess oils can reduce the appearance of open pores. Resist the urge to cleanse more than twice per day --- excessive cleansing can result in skin inflammation.

Step 2

Apply a topical treatment designed to encourage skin exfoliation and/or reduce oil buildup in the pores, states Dr. Audrey Kunin, a dermatologist writing on DERMA Doctor. Examples of skin creams that accomplish this include azelaic acid, topical vitamin A or alpha hydroxy acids. Apply the cream one to two times each day to reduce oil and dead skin cell buildup that can cause open pores.

Step 3

Exfoliate once per week using an exfoliating skin scrub, recommends Good Housekeeping. This can help your open pores appear less noticeable. Purchase an exfoliating scrub that utilizes round beads, which won't scratch or injure the skin. Moisten the face with warm water and gently massage the scrub on the skin, using circular motions. Rinse thoroughly.

Step 4

Apply a skin primer prior to applying any makeup. Take a small amount and apply to any areas you wear foundation makeup or powder, such as the forehead, cheeks and chin. Skin primers create a barrier between your skin and your makeup, according to Good Housekeeping, to prevent foundation from seeping into your pores. Skin primers can also be beneficial in reducing oily skin, which often accompanies open pores.
