Overview

Dry skin, medically known as xerosis, can cause skin to appear aged, as plump cells shrivel and create fine lines and wrinkles. Hereditary skin conditions may require aggressive treatments, but most dry skin results from environmental factors, and can be controlled with simple skin care practices. With diligence and the right products, you can cure your condition.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily to remove dirt, oil and debris, particularly if you wear makeup. A clean face is the foundation for moisturizers and other skin care products. Choose a mild cleanser, and avoid harsh products with added fragrances and medicines, particularly those designed for acne-prone skin. In addition, avoid cleansers containing exfoliating elements, which can be abrasive.

Step 2

Pat your face dry with a soft, cotton towel. Refrain from rubbing dry skin, to avoid irritation and redness.

Step 3

Slather a moisture-rich, mild product on your face after cleansing. Family Doctor.org recommends hypoallergenic products, which are less likely to cause allergic reactions. In addition, thick products often contain more moisturizing ingredients than thin lotions, which are water based. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after washing, as the pores on the face are open and will better absorb the product.

Step 4

Bundle up before going out in harsh weather, or stay inside if possible. Dry air is conducive to dry skin. A warm scarf, strategically wrapped around your face protects dry skin from harsh conditions.

Step 5

Follow the instructions for running a portable home humidifier, or attach one to your furnace. A humidifier will change dry in-home air to moist air, which will make facial skin suppler. MayoClinic.com recommends using these machines to cure the problems associated with sensitive skin, such as itching and flaking.
