How to Cure Dry Elbows
Dry elbows can be bothersome at any time of year, but they are especially prevalent in the winter months. Forced-air heating systems remove moisture from the air and can cause dry skin all over the body. Dry elbows can be itchy, flaky and uncomfortable. If you suffer from cracks in your dry elbows, this can lead to painful fissures and, in some cases, infection. Besides dry air, other causes of dry elbows include certain medications, washing too frequently and being over the age of 30. There are some home remedies that can often help with elbow dryness.
Keep your skin well hydrated. Drink enough fluids during the day. Use a humidifier to replace some of the moisture in the air that is often lacking in the winter.
Protect your elbows from the elements. Even if it is fairly warm outside, wear long shirt sleeves to avoid letting the sun and wind dry the skin on your elbows out more.
Shower or bathe in warm, not hot, water. Avoid using soap on your elbows. Pat them dry gently with a towel; do not rub them vigorously.
Apply a moisturizing lotion to your elbows after you bathe. The best ones, according to Johnson & Johnson, contain a humectant, such as glycerin.
Apply petroleum jelly or another thick barrier cream, such as Eucerin, to your elbows over the lotion. This will help to lock in the moisture from the shower and from the lotion.
See your physician or a dermatologist if your dry elbows persist, if you are unable to sleep due to dryness or itching, or if your elbows begin bleeding from dryness.
