How to Cure Damaged Skin
Curing damaged skin can be done with proper skin care techniques and avoidance of chemicals and other harsh elements. While everyone's skin is different,people who are over age 65 or live in dry, cold or low-humidity climates are at greater risks for dry skin. Severely dry skin can cause cracking and open sores, which allow bacteria to enter, leading to infection.
Avoid harsh elements by staying out of direct sunlight or wear appropriate clothing to protect damaged skin from the effects of the environment. Keep in mind, the sun's rays are most harmful between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., says the American Academy of Dermatology.
Bathe in warm water, rather than hot water. Hot water can steal essential oils from the skin. In addition, limit excessive bathing to avoid further irritating damaged skin.
Moisturize your skin with a thick cream or oil rather than a lotion that contains large amounts of water and potentially irritating perfumes. Apply the product to damp skin, such as after bathing, to help trap water within the surface cells.
Dress in gentle fabrics that are natural and non-irritating to damaged skin. Fibers such as cotton and silk are breathable and recommended.
Visit a dermatologist for chronic acne conditions. Dermatologists recommend early treatment for acne to prevent scarring and to allow existing lesions to heal without further irritation. In the meantime, use products that contain glycolic acid, retinol or vitamin C, which help the body produce new collagen, a skin-plumping protein.
