Overview

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States, according to the Acne Resource Center. It typically affects men and women between the ages of 18 and 24. Acne can occur on the face, shoulders, back and chest. To avoid breakouts, you should develop a daily cleansing and treatment routine that keeps your skin clean. You also need to apply medication to the areas where you break out most often. Doing this will help clear pimples in two or three days, but even better, a daily treatment regimen could prevent breakouts altogether.

Step 1

Wash your face every morning using a gentle cleanser. Soap helps keep sebum at bay and will clear bacteria.

Step 2

Apply benzoyl peroxide to the entire area where you breakout most often. Don't just dab the medication onto each pimple. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that benzoyl peroxide kills P. acnes, the bacteria that cause pimples to form. You can use a lotion or gel.

Step 3

Apply an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, to new pimples. Daniel Kern, founder of Acne.org, indicates that an AHA can quickly stop a new zit in its tracks. AHA's remove dead skin cells, reduces inflammation and stimulates the growth of new, smoother skin.

Step 4

Wash your face in the evening with a cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid slows cells from shedding inside the hair follicle, which prevents pores from clogging and new pimples from forming. MayoClinic.com reports that salicylic acid may help break down whiteheads and blackheads.

Step 5

Apply benzoyl peroxide to your skin again at night. You should apply benzoyl peroxide twice a day to areas most prone to breakouts.

Step 6

Clean your skin after sweating. Sweating won't cause breakouts but it can add to debris in clogged hair follicles. It's especially important to clean your skin after using gym equipment. It's easy to transfer bacteria to your skin from machines touched by lots of different people.

Step 7

Talk to your doctor about using a prescription medication if you breakout often or if your breakouts do not respond to over-the-counter treatments. A topical antibiotic will kill the bacteria that cause acne. Oral contraceptives, prescribed only to females, helps control the hormones that activate oil glands. Isotretinoin is a powerful drug reserved for use by those whose acne has not responded to other treatments.
