How to Combat Dry Skin
Dry skin, or xerosis, is a common problem, particularly in the cold winter months. Arid climates and sun exposure can also exacerbate dryness. Keeping your skin soft and healthy may require a little extra effort, but will be worth it when your skin feels smooth to the touch and no longer itches or flakes. Most cases of dry skin can be alleviated with simple lifestyle changes and inexpensive home remedies.
Avoid harsh cleansers containing fragrance and dye. Regular bath soap may lead to tight, itchy skin. Switch to a shower gel formulated for sensitive skin. Those containing cocoa butter or shea butter provide extra moisturizing benefits.
Bathe less, switching to every other day instead of every day. Freshen up with a quick, strategic splash of soap and water on the in-between days.
Moisturize your skin with a thick lotion or cream formulated especially for dryness. Hand lotion made for very rough or cracked hands can soothe your whole body when your skin is particularly dry. Look for a facial moisturizer containing sunscreen to provide further protection against the elements. Apply face and body creams after a shower, when your skin is still slightly damp.
Exfoliate your skin gently when you wash, using a scrub made of sugar or salt and oil. You can also use a loofah, soft washcloth or gloves made for use in the shower. Always apply moisturizer immediately after exfoliating.
Keep your shower water as tepid as you can stand. Stay in the shower just long enough to wash, rather than soaking in a hot bath, which can exacerbate dry skin problems.
