Overview

Scalp acne can have multiple sources, such as infection or infestation, but if the area is swollen, red and itchy, it may be due to an allergic reaction. Allergies are the body’s way of reacting to a foreign substance. In situations where an allergic reaction presents on the scalp, the culprit may be a shampoo, conditioner or new hair product. Treating this area might be complicated and difficult, but with some effort and time, the rash will subside.

Step 1

Wash hair with a medicated shampoo recommended by the pharmacist or doctor. Look for products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Check shampoos provided to treat eczema and psoriasis.

Step 2

Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or gel at night before bed. Use the strongest formula available. Rub the cream into the affected area and leave in place until morning.

Step 3

Take an antihistamine to help reduce the reaction to the allergy trigger. Follow the instruction on the package for proper dosage.

Step 4

Wash your hair regularly. This will keep the area clean and reduce the chance of infection.

Step 5

Seek medical help if the condition does not clear up. This could be something other than an allergy or require a stronger medication than available without a prescription.
