How to Clear Up Blackheads With a Homemade Formula
Blackheads aren't dangerous, but they can be an embarrassment. Though many people attribute the dark spots in blackheads to dirt and poor hygiene, blackheads, also known as open comedones, actually get their dark appearance from clogged hair follicles on the surface of your skin that look black when they reflect the light. The same methods you use to treat acne in general work on blackheads, so wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser and avoid touching your skin to help prevent blackheads. When you do get a breakout, a homemade face mask can help you quickly clear things up.
Combine 1/2 cup fuller's earth and 1 tsp. tincture of benzoin in a medium-size bowl. Add 1/4 cup witch hazel gradually, a little at a time, until it forms a thick, claylike mixture.
Use your fingers to spread the clay mixture over your skin, avoiding the area around your eyes. If you have an active breakout, spread the mask more thickly over the affected area.
Let the mixture harden on your face for 30 to 40 minutes, until it is completely dry.
Soak a hand towel or washcloth in warm water while your mask is hardening. When you're ready to remove the mask, drape the warm towel over your face until the heat from the towel softens the mask.
Use the towel and warm water to gently scrub away the mask until your skin is completely clear.
Use this mask once a week to prevent blackheads from forming and during active breakouts to help blackheads clear up.
