How to Clear Up Baby Acne
Overview
Baby acne is often referred to as neonatal acne. The condition is common in many infants and is seen at the time of birth to four months of age. The acne appears as whiteheads, small white bumps that appear on the chin, forehead and cheeks of infants. The acne may also have a pink appearance and occasionally is seen on the back. The acne lasts several weeks, but is only temporary. Most cases of infant acne require no treatment.
Step 1
Keep the infant's face clean. Make sure to use warm water and a soft washcloth and gently wipe the face and back area several times during the day. Avoid strong soaps or lotions on the baby's skin.
Step 2
Dry skin by patting and not rubbing. Rubbing the skin can cause increased redness and irritation. Do not pick or squeeze acne.
Step 3
Wash clothing with detergent that is mild and odor free. Some detergents linger on clothing and can cause additional irritation.
Step 4
Contact a doctor if acne continues to lasts longer than several months. Occasionally medication is recommended that contains benzoyl peroxide.
