How to Clear Up Acne Without Buying Products
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition. People prone to acne have pimples, blackheads and clogged pores, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Acne is caused by sebaceous glands in the skin producing too much oil, combining with dead skin cells, and then blocking the follicles, which become inflamed. Prescription drug and topical ointment treatments can be expensive, so treating your acne at home without buying products may be an option.
Stop eating foods that may cause your acne symptoms to worsen. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that it is possible that food allergies may play a role in adult acne. Some people report that some drinks and foods, especially nuts, make their acne worse. A low glycemic diet may help keep blood sugar stabilized and under control, particularly if you have noticed high sugar or carbohydrates affecting your acne. Keep a food diary, and note any changes to your skin when you eat certain foods. This will help you pinpoint foods that may need to be removed from your diet. Eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially green, leafy vegetables and fresh fruits.
Take 30 mg of zinc twice a day for a month and then 30 mg once a day after that to help improve acne. However, zinc can interact with tetracycline (an antibiotic used for acne), cause immune suppression, anemia and vomiting. Vitamin A has similar properties as retinoid drugs such as Accutane but with fewer side effects, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Do not take extra vitamin A if you have liver disease or are pregnant. Talk with your physician before taking any type of extra supplement or vitamin to make sure they do not interact with medications you may be taking.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser in the morning and at night. Don't scrub your skin, which can make acne more inflamed. Fully rinse your skin after washing, leaving no soapy residue. Brown University states that if you have acne, you should wash your hair regularly, as the oils from your hair and scalp can get on your face, leading to breakouts.
Avoid touching your face, as bacteria and dirt can be transferred from your hands to your face, which can make acne worse or lead to more breakouts. Avoid squeezing pimples, which can lead to scarring and can spread the bacteria.
Use tea tree oil to combat your acne. Tea tree oil is similar to benzoyl peroxide in that it targets bacteria and limits oil production, but it does not have the side effects of benzoyl peroxide. It also lessons inflammation and improves acne symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
