Severe acne is a condition marked by frequent, persistent breakouts of acne lesions, whiteheads or blackheads. These skin defects are caused by excess production of sebum, a substance produced by your skin that can clog pores, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Although diet alone cannot cure severe acne, switching to a raw food diet may help reduce the severity and frequency of acne breakouts. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist before changing your diet to address severe acne.

Step 1

Add fresh, raw garlic to vegetable dishes, raw pizzas and raw hummus. Garlic is a powerful antibiotic, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." This food may help clear bacteria from the surface of your skin that can contribute to acne breakouts. Chop, dice or crush garlic cloves to activate allicin, the antibiotic chemical in this herb.

Step 2

Include whole or ground flaxseeds in raw food dishes. Flaxseeds may help regulate the production of hormones that cause excess sebum, according to Karen Jessett, author of "The Ultimate Clear Skin Plan." They also contain dietary fiber, which may clear toxins from your bloodstream that can contribute to acne.

Step 3

Flavor salads, smoothies and raw soups with basil. The oil in basil leaves contains antibacterial properties that may help reduce the frequency of acne breakouts, according to Castleman. It also contain antioxidants that may help prevent scarring and skin damage caused by acne lesions.

Step 4

Incorporate raw fruits and vegetables into entrees and side dishes. Vegetables and fruits are abundant sources of vitamins and minerals that are necessary for healing and regulation of skin oils. Use carrots and bell peppers, which are rich sources of vitamin A, an important vitamin for controlling severe acne, according to the Balches. Also, consume spinach and kale, which provide vitamin E for skin healing and scar prevention.
