How to Clear Light Acne

Overview

Acne happens when pore blockages cause inflammation within your skin. According to DermNet NZ, mild acne can be effectively treated at home. Although genetics and hormones play an important role in your risk for developing acne, it has not been proven that any particular foods promote this condition. Treating mild acne through proper skin care is an important step in controlling your breakouts and preventing scarring. DermNetNZ states that while treatments may not work as quickly as desired it is important to be consistent.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin no more than twice daily. Use a gentle cleanser, massaging it into the skin and then rinsing it off with lukewarm water. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is okay to wash your skin after perspiring to eliminate bacteria; however, whenever you wash your face avoid scrubbing your skin as this can aggravate acne breakouts.

Step 2

Apply an over-the-counter acne lotion containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to unclog pimples. According to DermNet NZ, these topical treatments should be applied to your entire face (except for the eye area), and not just on blemishes. Tea tree oil is also effective in treating light acne.

Step 3

Wash your hair at least every other day to prevent oils from coming in contact with your skin. Hair that hangs over your face contributes to pore blockage by transferring bacteria and oils to your face, adding to your skin's natural oils. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that you wash oily hair daily.

Step 4

Apply an oil-free moisturizer to your skin to keep it soft and supple if peeling is present, suggests DermNet NZ. Opt for a moisturizer labeled non-comedogenic, meaning this product will not promote acne or clog your pores. When using cosmetics, opt for water-based powders and foundations.
