Acne is a disease that is characterized by bumps and nodules on the skin. It presents itself mostly on your face and neck, but it can also show up on your back and arms too. It can be caused by a variety of reasons: clogged pores, oil, inflammation and bacteria are the key components, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Step 1

Try over the counter, or OTC, products for mild acne problems. Most of these creams and lotions help dry excess oil and eliminate acne causing bacteria. Most OTC topical medicines contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Some side effects of these medications include: skin dryness, irritation or flaking. These effects usually diminish after a couple weeks of use.

Step 2

Use prescription topical medicines if your acne is moderate to severe. See dermatologist to figure out which treatment is best. These help keep hair follicles from becoming clogged, kill bacteria and slough away dead skin cells. Most contain Vitamin A or a derivative of Vitamin A. Some side effects include redness, irritation and stinging. Report any major side effects to your dermatologist so they may alter the prescription.

Step 3

Take antibiotics for moderate to severe acne. This will have to be determined by a dermatologist and is taken internally. Tetracycline, amoxicillin and erythromycin are some of the most common antibiotics. Side effects include extra skin sensitivity, redness, swelling, flaking and headaches. Tell your dermatologist if your side effects are severe.

Step 4

Use oral contraceptives if you are a woman. Often, acne is the cause of hormonal imbalances and these can help regulate them. They contain norgestimate and ethinyl estrodiol that help get rid of acne. Orthotricyclen is one of the most popular oral contraceptives used for acne treatment. Depression, nausea, breast sensitivity and headaches are common side effects.
