Overview

A buildup of excess oil, dead skin cells and debris can lead to clogged pores on the skin. Clogged pores can occur anywhere on the body, but are most common and problematic on the face, where they can lead to acne. To keep pores clean, use a combination of products suited to your skin type that help dissolve oils, and prevent dead cells and debris from sticking together.

Step 1

Wash with a glycolic acid or salicylic acid facial cleanser to remove surface oils and debris that clogs pores. These hydroxy acids help exfoliate and prevent dead skin cells from adhering to the skin. They also help other treatment products to penetrate the skin more deeply, increasing their effectiveness.

Step 2

Apply a willow bark treatment. Willow bark, a natural source of salicylic acid, penetrates pores, promotes the shedding of dead skin cells and dissolves hardened oils, keeping pores clear of debris and reducing clogs.

Step 3

Use a topical vitamin A treatment at night. Topical retinoids are vitamin A treatments used to treat acne and improve the appearance of the skin. According to DERMAdoctor, retinoids help to clear clogged pores by preventing cells from sticking together. Vitamin A treatments are available in prescription form, or you can look for over-the-counter products containing retinol or retinaldehyde.
