How to Clear Bad Acne Fast

Overview

A bad case of acne can seem like a never-ending cycle of healing lesions and fresh outbreaks. If your skin never gets a moment's rest, you may be looking for a way to get rid of your acne problem as fast as possible. No miraculous medicine can immediately cure a case of bad acne, but a combination of healthy skin habits and medical treatment will reduce your risk of lasting emotional and physical scars, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 1

Wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser once or twice per day to get rid of excess oil. Excessive scrubbing with hot water may make your acne worse, warns the American Academy of Dermatology. If your hair is oily and it touches your face often, shampooing every day will also ensure that your skin doesn't become too oily.

Step 2

Exfoliate with a scrub once or twice a week. Following up face washing with exfoliation will help reduce the layer of dead cells that contributes to clogged pores, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Step 3

Spread on an over-the-counter acne gel. Acne gels that contain active ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, will help get rid of excess oils and help dead cells slough off, according to MayoClinic.com. Begin by using a 5 percent gel once per day and increase use to twice daily after the first week if you aren't using any other medication.

Step 4

Use oil-free cosmetics, sunscreens and toiletries. Oil-free products should carry a label that says "non-comedogenic" or "non-acnegenic," meaning they won't clog pores or contribute to pimples, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. You can wear oil-free products every day, but remember to wash them off your skin every night.

Step 5

Ask your dermatologist about stronger treatments. If home care doesn't reduce your acne, your dermatologist may prescribe a stronger prescription gel, a topical or oral antibiotic to kill excess bacteria or an oral contraceptive to reduce hormonal acne if you're a woman, according to Mayo Clinic.com. He may also mention a strong medication called isotretinoin, or Accutane, if your acne is so severe that it doesn't respond to other types of medication.

Step 6

Ask your dermatologist about other therapies. Light therapy can help reduce bacteria, laser therapy can reduce oil production and cosmetic procedures, such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion, help promote skin cell turnover to rejuvenate the skin, according to MayoClinic.com.
