How to Clear Acne With Products Around the House
Acne usually results from excessive oil on the face, preventing dead skin cells from shedding. These cells accumulate and block pores, creating an environment where anaerobic bacteria that cause acne can grow. Acne is most prevalent in teenagers, and it usually goes away by age 30, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). If you have acne, you likely don't want to wait several years for the condition to resolve on its own. Certain items you might already have around the house may help decrease your skin problem.
Shampoo your hair every day. Oily skin tends to mean oily hair, which can aggravate acne, particularly around the hairline, as explained by the Mayo Clinic. Keep your hair off your face with a hairband or by wearing braids or a ponytail.
Use lime juice as a face wash or facial mask, as recommended by Grandma's Home Remedies. Squeeze the juice from half a lime into 1/2 cup of boiled milk that has cooled. Apply the solution to your face and then rinse with cool water. You also can create a facial mask of equal parts lime juice and organic sesame oil or peanut oil. Keep the mask on your face for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing.
Do the toothpaste and eye drops trick. Toothpaste has drying effects that can shrink pimples, according to the 2005 book, "The Dermadoctor Skinstruction Manual" by Audrey Kunin and Bill Gottlieb. Wash your face and pat dry, then dab toothpaste onto pimples. Try the technique for one hour the first time, on one or two pimples. If the paste doesn't cause skin irritation, you can apply it to a wider area and leave it on longer next time. Afterward, soak a cotton swab with an eye drop product, such as Visine and apply that to the pimples. Kunin and Gottlieb say the redness will disappear.
Add turmeric, ginger and cumin spices to your food. Ayurvedic medicine recommends eating turmeric to help eliminate toxins from the body, as explained by the Maharishi Ayurveda website, and thus possibly decreasing acne. Ayurveda also advises eating ginger and cumin along with turmeric for an effective acne treatment.
Make a turmeric paste for an acne remedy. Mix turmeric with organic sesame oil and apply it to the affected areas of your skin. You can leave the paste on for several hours, or overnight while sleeping. Because turmeric can stain fabric yellow, protect your pillow with another covering.
