Overview

Acne is an inflammatory condition that causes the skin to produce infected pustules, papules, cysts or blackheads. Most people try to use acne-fighting benzoyl peroxide cream but often experience burning and peeling because they are applying the cream incorrectly. In order to clear the skin, and have it remain that way, it is important to cleanse the skin using a gentle touch and a gentle soap, medicate the skin correctly and keep the skin properly hydrated.

Step 1

Cleanse the face with a sensitive skin soap. Wet the skin thoroughly, then lather up the skin with a soap formulated for sensitive skin types. Spread the lather to all parts of the face, then rinse the skin clean with water. Try to avoid rubbing the face, which can irritate the skin and exacerbate acne breakouts. A light washing is all that is needed to correctly clean acne-prone skin. Avoid using harsh acne soaps or cleansers, which often contain chemical ingredients that can further irritate the skin. Wash the face gently with a sensitive skin soap two times every day.

Step 2

Medicate the skin correctly using a low-strength benzoyl peroxide cream. Benzoyl peroxide cream is a highly effective acne-fighter but is often misused. There are many strengths of benzoyl peroxide creams, including 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Using a benzoyl peroxide cream higher than 2.5% in concentration can cause the skin to become red and itchy and can lead to peeling or burning. Spread a pea-sized amount of the lowest-strength cream onto the skin, smoothing it around gently until it has been absorbed. Repeat two times a day after washing the skin.

Step 3

Moisturize the skin after the benzoyl peroxide cream has dried using an oil-free moisturizing lotion. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of an oil-free lotion onto the fingers, and spread it gently around the skin. Massage the lotion in with the fingertips until it has been absorbed into the skin. Using an oil-free moisturizing lotion will keep the skin properly hydrated without clogging the pores.
Since benzoyl peroxide creams in any strength can be drying on the skin, it is important to always used an oil-free lotion two times per day after applying the benzoyl peroxide cream.
