For those that do not want to subject their skin and body to such products, there are a host of natural ways that you can try to help relieve acne breakouts.

Step 1

Practice good hygiene. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to effectively clean up an acne breakout is to regularly wash your skin. This is especially important for your face and back which are more prone to acne breakouts than other areas. Keeping your skin clean helps reduce the dirt and oils that can mix with dead skin cells and block pores. Keeping the skin clean can also help reduce the amount of bacteria present on the surface of the skin that can cause an acne breakout. Be sure to use a specified face wash for your face, as face washes tend to use ingredients that are more gentle on the sensitive tissue of the face.

Step 2

Exfoliate every other day. Using an exfoliating product, such as a natural face scrub, can also help clear up problems with acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the contributing factors to acne breakouts is the shedding of dead skin cells. These skin cells unite with the oils and dirt on the skin and block your pores. By exfoliating, you help remove dead skin cells from the skin, keeping your pores clearer. This can not only help clear up acne, but it can also help prevent future outbreaks as well. It is important not to exfoliate too often, as it can end up damaging the skin.

Step 3

Change your diet. Although rumors have abounded for many years that foods, such as chocolate, can increase the amount of acne breakouts you experience, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, these rumors are unproven. However, the types of foods you eat can influence the overall health of your skin. The healthier your skin, the less chances you will have of developing acne. Insuring adequate amounts of vitamin A, vitamin B-2 and B-3, vitamin E and zinc can help insure your skin has the necessary nutrients to fend off acne breakouts. Drinking plenty of water can also help your skin keep the hydration it needs to naturally prevent acne problems. Eating correctly can also help boost your immune system, which allows your body to better fight off infection from the bacteria that cause acne.

Step 4

Wear less makeup. Makeup is often a culprit for causing acne breakouts, especially on the face. This is because many makeups have ingredients that are comedogenic (acne-causing). Common makeup ingredients such as laureth-4, sodium chloride and isopropyl isostearate can all contribute to the blocking of pores. Wearing less makeup can help reduce the amount of these ingredients being introduced to your pores. If giving up your makeup is not an option for you, at least remove the makeup before you go to bed at night, and reapply it in the morning. Organic makeup may cause less acne breakouts, but even some organic makeups still contain comedogenic ingredients.

Step 5

Try herbal remedies. When treating acne naturally, finding herbs that have antibacterial or astringent properties can help kill acne and clear out your pores without using harsh chemicals. For example, aloe gel works as a topical antibacterial agent when applied to broken out skin. Other herbal remedies with antibacterial or astringent properties include lavender, tea tree oil, witch hazel, walnut leaf and burdock root.
