Overview

Acne is the result of an excess amount of oil in the skin and is especially common during adolescence. This oil can block the pores, which become inflamed and may cause scarring in severe cases of acne. The traditional treatment for acne scars is removal of the upper layer of skin through some mechanical means. This procedure is known as dermabrasion.

Step 1

Evaluate your suitability for dermabrasion. This procedure generally requires you to be free of diseases such as HIV or hepatitis that can be transmitted through blood. Dermabrasion will cause some of your blood to become aerosolized, which can present a high health risk to medical personnel.

Step 2

Refrain from using acne medication, according to your dermatologist's instructions. Some dermatologists believe that dermabrasion can lead to abnormal scarring in patients who use cisretinoic acid. This acid is contained in acne medication like Accutane.

Step 3

Receive medication prior to the dermabrasion. You'll frequently get a mild sedative to help you relax and a local anesthetic on the area of your skin to be treated. Some dermatologists will numb your skin with a cold-producing substance instead of anesthetic.

Step 4

Undergo the dermabrasion procedure. Your dermatologist will abrade (remove) the upper layers of skin with a dermabrasion tool. This tool contains a diamond tip that rotates at high speed, usually a minimum 300 times per second. This tool should only be used by an operator with a high degree of skill since it must be controlled manually.

Step 5

Perform aftercare on the treated site. You'll need to replace the dressings daily until your skin scabs over, which usually takes several days. Your dermatologist will typically prescribe antibiotics during your recovery and you may also need pain medication.
