Overview

Acne can be bad enough, but add redness and irritation, and dealing with these issues can become a challenge. Products formulated to treat acne, while still being gentle on your skin, can help banish blemishes and redness without drying out your face. You can also use makeup designed to conceal pimples and camouflage an uneven skin tone. Be sure that all of the products you use are oil-free and safe for sensitive skin. Otherwise, they might make your skin problems worse.

Step 1

Wash your face both in the morning and at night with a gentle cleanser that contains no fragrances. This will clean your skin and rid your pores of the dirt, oil and dead cells that can lead to acne, without causing redness or irritation. Allure suggests Eau Thermale Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser for Intolerant Skin, which promises to clean, calm and soften your skin without making it feel dry or tight. Apply this product with your fingertips, using a circular motion, and then dab it off with a tissue. You can rinse it off with water if you prefer, although the company claims this step is not necessary.

Step 2

Use a benzoyl peroxide cream formulated with 2.5 percent of the medicine. While some products contain up to 10 percent benzoyl peroxide, Allure notes that the lower dosage is just as effective at battling breakouts, but will be much less likely to cause irritation. Dry your face before applying this cream, and then dab it directly onto pimples and over any blemish-prone areas.

Step 3

Apply an oil-free moisturizer that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Sunburn can make red, irritated skin worse, as well as lead to peeling or flaking. Cosmopolitan recommends Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture SPF 15, which promises to hydrate your skin and protect it from the sun, without being greasy or clogging your pores. This product is hypoallergenic and does not contain alcohol or other ingredients that can dry out your skin.

Step 4

To conceal individual pimples, use a stick concealer that matches your skin tone, says makeup artist Ross Burton. To even out redness on your entire face, apply a powder with a green tint. Cosmopolitan suggests Physicians Formula Powder Palette Multi-Colored Face Powder in Green. This product contains no fragrances or oils, and it promises to give your skin a natural appearance without making it look green or monotone. You can wear it alone or under foundation. Lightly swipe the powder over the red areas of your face, and be sure to tap the excess powder off the brush before applying.
