How to Clean Acne
Acne is a skin condition that affects about four out of five Americans at some point during their lives, notes Dr. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." There are several factors that can contribute to acne breakouts, including genetics, hormone levels, environmental toxins and diet. However, proper cleansing is essential for acne-prone skin. Cleansing can help reduce the frequency and severity of acne breakouts, and can help keep the skin from becoming damaged and producing scar tissue.
Wash acne-prone areas no more than twice a day with a mild facial or skin cleanser and rinse thoroughly with cool water. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, washing more than twice per day can worsen acne outbreaks.
Avoid using loofahs or other rough cleansing surfaces to wash acne-prone areas. Rough scrubbing can make acne outbreaks worse and increase the risk of scarring.
Crush dandelion leaves and roots, and add just enough water to form a paste, advises Dr. Balch. Spread the dandelion over acne-prone areas and cover the area with cheesecloth or another type of soft cloth. Leave the dandelion on your skin for up to 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. Dandelion may have anti-inflammatory properties, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The New Healing Herbs." This may help to reduce inflammation in the skin's pores and the development of acne lesions.
Apply a lotion containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide after cleansing. These chemicals may help prevent pores from becoming blocked between cleansings.
Apply basil essential oil to the skin once per day. According to Castleman, the chemical compounds in basil oil have antibacterial properties, and may help clear the skin of bacteria that can cause acne breakouts.
