Combination skin occurs when a person has both oily and dry sections of skin. Your T-zone, the area made up of your forehead and your nose, will most likely be oily. The dry skin will likely occur on your cheeks. Your goal in caring for combination skin is to keep the skin well hydrated without making your face look greasy. If you can not get your combination skin under control with at-home care, speak to a dermatologist for recommendations.

Step 1

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser each morning. The cleanser removes oil and dirt without using harsh chemicals to dry out the skin. Look for brands that are labeled non-comedogenic and alcohol-free. If a product is labeled non-comedogenic, it means that it does not block the pores. Use the gentle cleanser again each evening to remove makeup and skin care products.

Step 2

Balance your skin with an alcohol-free toner. The toner works as an astringent to get rid of the oil in the T-zone area of your face. After drying your skin, use a cotton ball to apply toner.

Step 3

Moisturize combination skin with a lightweight gel. According to "Cosmopolitan Magazine," a gel-based moisturizer can provide moisture to the dry sections without causing the oily sections to look greasier. Use the moisturizer in the morning as well as each evening before bed.

Step 4

Choose a foundation that does not contain oil. Oil-based foundations will worsen the appearance of combination skin. Liquid foundation can be used as long as it is oil-free. A mineral powder can also be used in place of liquid foundation. All other makeup products that you use on your face should also be labeled oil-free and non-comedogenic.

Step 5

Exfoliate your skin on a weekly basis. Remove dead skin cells by using an exfoliating scrub on the face.
