A good skin care routine always starts with a clean face. Once your face is clean, there are additional steps you can take to protect and maintain a healthy complexion. At the 2009 American Academy of Dermatology's SKIN conference, dermatologist Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, M.D., FAAD stated, "With adequate hydration and use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, the skin has the advantage of protecting itself from free radicals and harmful ultraviolet radiation that cause skin damage, discoloration, premature wrinkles and even skin cancer." Depending on your skin type, you can find the best way to care for your clean skin.

Step 1

Tone the skin on your face with an astringent. Facial cleansers remove dead skin, makeup and dirt, but they leave the skin vulnerable. Dabbing your skin with a cotton ball soaked in skin toner helps to close the pores so dirt, toxins and environmental pollutants cannot enter. The astringents also remove any additional make-up, oil or soap residue and leave your skin feeling tingly and fresh. Use toner with witch hazel for oily skin, and toner with added moisturizers for dry skin.

Step 2

Smooth moisturizer onto your skin. Skin needs hydration to stay soft and flexible. Light, oil-free moisturizers are best for oily skin and heavier moisturizing creams are best for dry skin. Moisturizers with added ingredients such as salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid or retinol may also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Step 3

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 on all exposed areas of skin. Damage from harmful sun rays is one of the leading contributors to skin cancer and skin aging. Reapply sunscreen frequently when spending time outside and use a waterproof sunscreen if you will be in water or perspiring.
