Overview

Baby acne is a common occurrence and one that concerns parents when they see it. But generally, acne in infants tends to be mild and harmless to the baby. Appearing on the face and sometimes the back, baby acne doesn't require any particular treatment, since it will usually go away on its own eventually. However, there are some things parents can do to prevent it getting worse and help their baby on his way back to having picture-perfect skin again.

Step 1

Wash the baby's face daily. Concentrate your efforts around the baby's mouth, since spit-up, saliva and dried milk can all make baby acne worse. Only use mild baby-specific soap and water to clean the infant's face, since anything harsher may aggravate the problem. Put the soap on a wet washcloth and gently rub over his entire face. Wash the soap out of the washcloth and repeat with water alone. For the area around the eyes, you may want to use a cotton ball instead of the washcloth. After washing, gently pat his face with a dry washcloth or towel. Avoid using baby lotions on your baby while acne is present, since these can irritate the affected area if he touches his face.

Step 2

Clean the baby's clothes and your own in baby detergent to avoid harsh chemicals that might irritate his skin even more. Washing your own clothes in baby detergent is just as important as washing his, since you will be holding and cuddling him, exposing his face to your clothes every time you do so.

Step 3

For severe or persistent baby acne, get a medicated prescription cream from the doctor. Physicians will generally prescribe a baby-safe version of a topical cream with benzoyl peroxide or retinoids to treat a severe case of infant acne.
