Acne is a skin condition caused by excessive oil production. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, no one knows exactly why some people produce more skin oil, known as sebum, than others. The prevailing theories include hormone imbalances and possible genetic traits. When the skin produces too much sebum, oil pools to collect dead cells and debris, which leads to acne. Those with acne-prone skin need to take measures to calm breakouts and let skin heal.

Step 1

Wash your skin at least twice a day with a gentle cleanser. Stay away from astringents, scrubs and facial masks. These products irritate sensitive skin. Try to avoid washing more than twice. According to the Mayo Clinic, excessive washing will irritate the skin.

Step 2

Pull your hair back so that it does not touch the affected areas. Hair carries oils in it naturally. If it touches sensitive skin, the oil will transfer and add to the problem. Avoid touching the affected area with anything, including fingers.

Step 3

Cleanse your face after exercising or excessive sweating. Sweat increases oil production and will further irritate the skin.

Step 4

Use oil-free products. Specifically, look for items marked “noncomedogenic.” This includes makeup, lotions and sunblock.

Step 5

Apply an over-the-counter treatment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These products help reduce inflammation and calm burning skin.

Step 6

Take antibiotics if your doctor recommends them. The best treatment may be to eliminate the bacteria and allow the skin to heal.
