Hyperpigmentation, or melasma, refers to dark areas and brown spots on the skin. Sun exposure, hormones and direct injury can all lead to over-production of melanin, which in turn results in hyperpigmentation.

Step 1

Protect your skin from the sun. To prevent hyperpigmentation from sun damage, always wear sunscreen, preferably with an SPF of 15 or higher, and a wide-brimmed hat, Also, try to avoid the sun during the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, you should choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. If you notice unusual new dark spots or splotches appearing on your skin, consult a physician about the possibility of your medications contributing to increased melanin production.
