How to Avoid Dry Skin in Hot Tubs

Overview

One of the main complaints about bathing in a hot tub is that the skin can become dry and itchy after use. If you have sensitive skin, you will especially be susceptible to dryness after a dip in the hot tub. In the case that psoriasis is causing your dry skin after using a hot tub, you may want to avoid the water. This is especially important if you have any open sores on the body.

Step 1

Apply a conditioner to the water. There are certain water conditioners that contain moisturizing ingredients that can help prevent dry skin when using a hot tub. An example is Velvet Touch Moisturizer. Make sure the product is oil free since you want to avoid any leftover residue from it. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how much of the solution to add to the water.

Step 2

Choose an alternative sanitizer for your hot tub. Certain chemicals used to sanitize the water of a hot tob, such as chlorine, can dry out the skin. Copper is the main ingredient found in many alternative sanitizers and does not have the skin irritation side effects like chlorine. One product example of a sanitizer that uses copper is Cleanwater Blue.

Step 3

Shower in cool water after using the hot tub. Since long soaks in waters at high temperatures can cause itching and dryness of the skin, rinse off with cool water immediately after soaking in the hot tub to prevent this problem.

Step 4

Put on a moisturizing lotion after your shower. If you still feel like your skin is dry after a dip in the hot tub, lather on a body lotion to rehydrate the skin.
