Overview

Areas of darker pigmentation appear on skin damaged over the years by ultraviolet radiation exposure. This makes the face, hands, arms, legs and shoulders most susceptible. These dark spots, otherwise known as solar lentigines, liver spots, sun spots and age spots, are a typical part of the skin's aging process, usually manifesting after the age of 55, according to Aetna's InteliHealth. The only way to avoid developing these dark spots is to actively protect your face from ultraviolet radiation exposure over the course of your life.

Step 1

Put on a wide-brimmed hat when you go outside during daylight hours. The hat is most beneficial if it wraps all the way around so that it shades the back of your neck in addition to your face, but even just a brim in the front can provide at least some protection.

Step 2

Wear large sunglasses that filter out ultraviolet radiation while outdoors during the daytime. Skin around the eyes is thin and particularly sensitive, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. As an added benefit, this reduces the risk of developing cataracts.

Step 3

Apply a generous layer of sunblock to your facial skin 20 to 30 minutes before going out during the day, along with all other skin that won't be protected by clothing, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Step 4

Re-apply sunblock every two hours and after swimming or sweating, says New York Presbyterian Hospital. Do so regardless of how long the package claims your product provides protection and even if it is labeled waterproof or water-resistant.

Step 5

Put up a beach umbrella to shield your face when at the beach or sitting outdoors for an extended period of time. The shade it provides will also protect your face from ultraviolet radiation reflecting off surrounding sand, pavement and other surfaces.
