Overview

Blackheads are small black spots that can appear on the face because of the pores becoming partially blocked. Also known as open comedones, blackheads can last for months on the face if left untreated. While some occurrences of blackheads (such as those due to hormonal swings) cannot be prevented, there are methods that prevent these skin problems from ever forming.

Step 1

Utilize a daily face wash to cleanse your face twice a day (once in the morning and then at night). Washing the face helps to remove dirt, oil and debris that can otherwise plug the pores and cause blackhead development. Use an oil-free cleanser, as one containing oil could further clog the pores.

Step 2

Apply a weekly exfoliating scrub, which helps to rid the skin of extra dirt, debris and dead skin cells that can collect on the face. Choose an exfoliating scrub that uses rounded exfoliating beads, because uneven or jagged ones can scrape the skin and cause inflammation. Exfoliate at least once a week but no more than twice per week.

Step 3

Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher when going into the sun for any extended period of time. Sun damage can cause the pores to enlarge, which can then make them more susceptible to collecting dirt and oil and result in blackheads.

Step 4

Use monthly microdermabrasion treatments, which can help to further remove dead skin cells from the face. Microdermabrasion is performed at most spas and salons and utilizes a special wand that has crystals on its end. When the crystals rub against the face, they work to "polish" the skin, reducing the dead skin that resides on the face and can clog pores.

Step 5

Refrain from using makeup or skincare products that contain oil, as this can clog the pores. It is a good idea, however, to utilize a daily moisturizer (non oil-containing) that can help keep the skin soft and supple, not peeling and dry.
