How to Avoid Back Acne How to Avoid Back Acne

Overview

Back acne develops as a result of the pores on your back becoming clogged with oils, bacteria and impurities. Back acne differs from facial acne in that it is difficult to reach to treat it effectively. This can make keeping your back clean and oil-free seem like an impossible task, especially as the back has more sebaceous glands than other parts of your body. You can use a back scratcher with a washcloth attached to effectively clean and treat your back, to avoid acne.

Step 1

Cleanse your back using a soap designed for sensitive skin types. Attach a washcloth to the end of a back scratcher using a rubber band. Wet the washcloth with water, and lather it well with a sensitive skin soap. Apply the lathered washcloth your back, and rinse it off well with water. Do not scrub the soap onto your back, which leads to irritation and abrasion. Simply lather your back well, then rinse it off with water. Repeat twice a day.

Step 2

Apply a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream. Benzoyl peroxide dries up acne pustules and releases oxygen onto your skin to kill off acne-causing bacteria. Although benzoyl peroxide creams are available in different strengths, use the 2.5 percent cream, or lower, so that you avoid acne without irritating or damaging your back. Attach a fresh washcloth to the end of the back scratcher with a rubber band, and squeeze a quarter-size amount of benzoyl peroxide cream onto the cloth. Spread the cream onto your back until it has been absorbed. Repeat twice a day, after washing your back.

Step 3

Moisturize your back using an oil-free moisturizing lotion. Your skin can become overly dry if you use benzoyl peroxide cream without following it with a moisturizer. Moisturizing your back will keep your skin soft, without clogging your pores. Attach a fresh washcloth to the end of the back scratcher using a rubber band, and squeeze a quarter-size amount of an oil-free moisturizer onto the cloth. Smooth the moisturizer onto your back until it soaks in. Repeat twice a day after using benzoyl peroxide cream.
