Overview

Acne plagues just about everyone at some point or another. While in some cases, acne is unavoidable, you can avoid acne if you're not prone to it by making sure you do the right things to prevent getting acne in the first place. Everyday activities, hygiene habits and even the clothes you wear can all play parts in whether you get acne or not. Avoid acne by making sure you have good habits that keep your skin clear.

Step 1

Avoid touching your face. It's tempting to pick at pimples, or you may have habits of touching your face while studying or in class, but touching your face transfers the oil and bacteria from your hands to your face, which could cause acne. Make sure that you also pull your hair out of your face as often as possible; hair can be very oily, and that oil can clog pores and cause more acne.

Step 2

Wash your face once or twice a day, but no more. While it may seem that keeping your face clean by washing it multiple times per day would prevent acne, the excess washing can actually perpetuate it. When you wash your face, you strip it of moisture, telling your glands to produce even more oil. Washing your face once when you wake up and before you go to bed is plenty to avoid acne.

Step 3

Choose natural cosmetics. Synthetic cosmetics are filled with oils and fillers that can clog pores and cause acne. Using natural makeup with mineral ingredients won't clog pores or inflame acne. Look for words on the packaging like "hypoallergenic" or "non-comedogenic," which denote that they won't clog pores. Also, remember to wash your makeup brushes once per month so that you keep them clean and oil-free.

Step 4

Wash your pillow case and bedding every month. It often goes overlooked, but sleeping on a dirty pillow case can allow bacteria and oil to sit on your face all night long, adding to acne woes. Wash these items with a good-quality bleach to sanitize them.

Step 5

Wear breathable clothes that are loose and made of natural materials. Always wearing tight clothing made from synthetic material blends can both irritate the skin on your back, and cause it to hold in sweat, which will cause acne on your body. Choosing loose cotton clothing will help your skin breathe and help you avoid acne.
