How to Apply Kinesio Tape
The Kinesio Taping Method is a system of treating acute and chronic muscle and joint injures in which Kinesio tape is applied to the surface of the body. Kinesio Taping differs from conventional bandage-style taping in that it does not use compression or immobilization of the injured area. Instead, Kinesio Taping relies on theories of activation of the nervous and circulatory systems to initiate healing. When properly applied, Kinesio tape supports and promotes healthy muscle function, promotes normal fluid flow in tissues, activates the body's inherent pain management mechanism and corrects imbalanced joint function.
Ask the person to be taped to sit in a neutral, upright position, looking straight ahead. Measure from 3 inches below the base of the neck up to the base of the skull. Subtract 20 percent for the stretch of the tape and cut a strip of tape to that length.
Cut the strip of tape in half lengthwise, stopping at the last 3 inches. This strip will form a "Y."
Remove the backing from the uncut end of the tape only, and apply it, starting three inches below the base of the neck. Have the person flex his neck by drawing his chin toward his chest.
Remove the backing from one side of the "Y," Stretch the tape to a length approximately 20 percent greater than its resting length and apply the tape diagonally along the side of the neck. End at the base of the skull, behind the ear to form one side of the "Y" formation. Alternatively, remove the backing gradually, peeling away a small section at a time, stretching and applying it.
Repeat Step 4 to apply the second "Y" section to the opposite side of the person's neck.
Low Back Strain
Place the person in a neutral upright position. Measure along the muscles on each side of the spine, from the top of the sacrum to the top of the lumbar spine, where the spine begins to curve outward. Cut two strips to this length.
Tear the paper backing off one strip and apply the end of the strip to one side of the spine, level with the top of the sacrum--the triangular bone at the base of the spine.
Anchor the tape strip at the starting point on the sacrum. Hold the unapplied portion and have the person bend forward at the waist at approximately 45 degrees.
Apply the rest of the strip. Do not add any stretch to the tape for this application. Repeat, with the second strip on the other side of the spine.
