Causes of Scarring

A scar is a sign that your body has mended an open wound. Regardless of what caused the injury, your skin automatically produces fibrous tissue to replace normal skin. When the damaged area of skin is large, it will take your body more time to heal the wound and this will increase the likelihood of detectable scarring. Mederma.com says its cream will not completely erase scars but it will smooth and soften them.

Uses

Mederma is a registered trademark for a number of products that are intended to diminish the appearance of scars. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says Mederma cream is effective for old and new scars that are due to acne, burns, injuries, surgery and stretch marks. Mederma.com says Mederma has been the top doctor-recommended brand for scars for more than 10 years.

Ceplain

According to Stretchmarkcreams.org, the active ingredient in Mederma is cepalin (proprietary botanical extract derived from onions) that is believed to lessen the appearance of scars. Mederma says onion extract has been used throughout history to relieve skin irritation and inflammation.

Types of Mederma

In addition to the mainstay ointment, there is also a Mederma for children that has a color-changing formulation intended to engage children in their scar-treatment process. This product is commonly used to reduce marks that are due to bug bites, cuts and scrapes.

The AAD says Mederma cream plus SPF 30 is formulated to not only soften scars but shield them from sun exposure. Mederma.com says each one of its products is greaseless and has a pleasant scent.

Application & Outcome

Mederma is supposed to be applied three times a day for eight weeks on new scars. Existing scars may require treatment for a period of three to six months. Mederma.com says some scars may fade faster than others. Noticeable improvement is usually detected after about one month of treatment.
