Overview

Acne is a skin condition that can occur at any age, however, it is most common in teenagers, states MedlinePlus. This condition causes blemishes on the skin that are often referred to as pimples, zits, whiteheads and blackheads. The face, back, neck, buttocks and shoulders are the areas most commonly affected by acne. Clearing up acne involves treating the acne blemishes and working to get the acne under control.

Step 1

Treat the acne-prone areas as soon as you notice a blemish forming. The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you will see results.

Step 2

Stop picking at your acne. Resist the urge to pick at the blemishes. Scratching, picking, squeezing or trying to pop the blemishes can introduce bacteria into the area, which can lead to infection and permanent scarring.

Step 3

Wash the acne-prone area gently. Use a gentle antibacterial soap. Cleanse your skin once or twice per day, suggests the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Washing more often than this may lead to increased irritation.

Step 4

Wash your hair. Keep the hair around the acne-prone area clean and free from oil based or greasy products, recommends MedlinePlus. Shampoo daily, if necessary, and limit the use of hair-styling products.

Step 5

Apply an over-the-counter (OTC) acne product to the area. Follow the manufacturer's directions, as these products vary in strength. Some peeling may occur when you use these products. If this happens, you should continue to use the products, but decrease the frequency of use, if necessary.

Step 6

Use only water-based, non-comedogenic products on acne-prone areas of the skin. Oil-based products and those that aren't labeled non-comedogenic may worsen your acne. Sunscreen, cosmetics and moisturizers are some products that are often available in water-based, non-comedogenic formulas.
