Overview

It's a great feeling to finally get rid of your last acne lesion, but once your skin clears, you might be unhappy with what's left behind. Pitted, depressed or deep acne scars, sometimes referred to as craters, can make you feel self-conscious and like you'll never get out from under the thumb of acne. Even though acne craters are permanent, there are ways to treat them, reduce their appearance or remove them altogether.

Step 1

Treat skin gently. Do not pick at your skin, overscrub it or use harsh ingredients in an attempt to smooth out your skin. Be patient---in some cases, acne craters will fill in on their own over time, especially if you are young. If your skin is still relatively elastic, it may very well heal on its own. If a year has passed and you still have deep acne craters, you are likely to have them for life.

Step 2

Use fillers. Have your deep scars plumped up using fillers. Fat and collagen are the most common substances used to fill in depressed acne scars. Fillers are injected into the scar in order to plump it up and make it appear flush with the rest of your skin. While this procedure needs to be repeated every couple of months, filler injections are a viable way to smooth over your acne craters and give your skin a smoother appearance.

Step 3

Undergo laser treatment. Have your acne craters treated with laser treatments. Laser therapy can be directed at the dermis, or the deeper layers of skin, to trigger collagen production, which can fill in your scars over time. Repeated treatments are necessary to see adequate results. Laser treatments are usually only viable on shallow acne scars.

Step 4

Resurface your skin. Have dermabrasion performed to sand off the top layer of skin and encourage new tissue growth. Once your skin heals, it will be smoother and your scars will appear much more shallow. If you have deep scars, dermabrasion is unlikely to eliminate your acne craters completely.

Step 5

Talk to your dermatologist about surgery. When having acne craters surgically removed, scars will be cut out of your skin and the surrounding tissue will be stitched together. For very large or deep scars, a skin graft is sometimes used to fill in the space where the scar was located.
