How Can I Use Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Medications While I'm Pregnant?

How Can I Use Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Medications While I'm Pregnant?

Overview

Acne, characterized by red bumps, is common during pregnancy. This is due to hormonal changes and increased fluid retention, which can increase your skin's production of oil. It is important to be careful of things you consume or use during pregnancy, since many medications can affect your unborn baby.

Step 1

Discuss the safety of using benzoyl peroxide during pregnancy with your doctor before you use the medicine. The American Pregnancy Association states that benzoyl peroxide is recommended safe during pregnancy; however, Drugs.com suggests that it only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor can help you decide if it is the best method of treatment during your pregnancy.

Step 2

Clean your skin with a gentle and mild cleanser twice a day, then pat your skin dry with a clean towel. This may help keep your acne under control in addition to preparing your skin to be treated with benzoyl peroxide.

Step 3

Apply a benzoyl peroxide topical medication to your clean skin. It should be in the strength recommended by your doctor, most of which are available over the counter. Follow the directions on the packaging exactly, and do not apply more than a thin layer to your skin.

Step 4

Continue to use the medication until your doctor tells you that you no longer need it. Apply it regularly and consistently to get maximum results. The Mayo Clinic recommends applying benzoyl peroxide to your skin 1 to 4 times a day, but you should ask your doctor which dosing frequency is right for you.
